NAMIRS – Steering Committee Meeting in Rijeka

On 29 March, the Consortium of the CEI-led NAMIRS project gathered in Rijeka, Croatia to discuss the advancement of activities and to plan upcoming actions.

As Coordinator of the project, the CEI-Executive Secretariat gave an overview of the implmented activities and those in the pipeline, and updated the partners on administrative and communication activities, recalling, in particular, the opportunities for NAMIRS to be presented at the RAMOGEPOL event and the Adriatic Oil Spill Conference in May 2023 as well as at the Barcolana and Sea Summit in October 2023.

Over the last months, partners have prepared a risk assessment report analysing the state-of-the-art and the vulnerability of the North Adriatic Sea, and mapping the existing resources that can be used in case of incidents at sea. This research will feed the draft guidelines for the revision and the updated version of the Sub – Regional Contingency Plan. It will also contribute to the Contingency Plan on which REMPEC is working and with whom the NAMIRS Consortium is actively collaborating.

In the coming months, NAMIRS partners will perform a series of trainings for at -sea and on-shore first-line responders. The main aim is to get actors involved in the response to marine accidental pollution to get familiar with instruments such as the oil-spill simulator and aircrafts for oil-spill response to improve the level of preparedness and response to oil-spill incidents.

Moreover, the Italian Coast Guard is working on the elaboration of common Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the Northern Adriatic, that integrate the three national procedures from Italy, Croatia and Slovenia and that will be tested during a structured exercise at sea in the coming fall in the Gulf of Trieste. The latter will focus on oil-spill response capacity by using naval units from all three partner countries and aircraft from the Italian Coast Guard in compliance with the previously drafted SOPs and the trainings performed.
