GreenPATH partners gather in Trieste for 3rd Steering Committee Meeting to advance sustainable mobility in Central Europe

Partners of the GreenPATH project, co-funded by the Interreg Central Europe Programme, convened in Trieste for the third Steering Committee meeting on 15–16 April 2025.

The event, hosted at the premises of the CEI– Executive Secretariat (CEI-ES), brought together representatives from across the region to review progress, share expertise, and coordinate next steps in fostering greener and more inclusive commuting systems in Central European Functional Urban Areas (FUAs).

GreenPATH aims to promote a shift toward sustainable urban mobility by co-developing and testing innovative solutions tailored to the needs of medium-sized cities and their surrounding areas.

Over the two-day meeting, project partners presented achievements in stakeholder engagement, digital solutions for mobility management, awareness-raising campaigns, and capacity building for local policymakers.

Several sessions also focused on the design and upcoming implementation of pilot actions in participating territories, showcasing context-based interventions—from smart commuting platforms to public awareness initiatives—geared toward reducing car dependency and encouraging multimodal, climate-friendly mobility.

As part of its contribution to the project, CEI-ES is leading a comprehensive analysis of cross-border home-to-work mobility in the Trieste FUA, with a particular focus on flows between Slovenia and Italy. Drawing on mobile phone data, traffic counts, and transport modeling, the study highlights the complexity and potential of cross-border commuting. The findings provide actionable insights for solving public transport gaps, informing service design, and supporting future planning initiatives.

The project's goals are strongly linked to the CEI’s Plan of Action 2024–2026, in particular to objective 2.4 “Promoting Connectivity and Sustainable mobility,” which prioritizes connectivity, innovation, and sustainability in the transport sector. Initiatives like GreenPATH represent a valuable opportunity to address these challenges through data-driven planning and transnational cooperation.

By combining policy dialogue with practical, on-the-ground solutions, GreenPATH reflects the CEI’s strategic commitment to supporting innovation, improving regional connectivity, and promoting sustainable transport practices that enhance the quality of life for citizens across its Member States.
