SUSTANCE: A new project to improve public transport in peripheral areas of Central Europe kick-starts in Trieste

On 4 - 5 April, the CEI - Executive Secretariat (CEI-ES) hosted the kick-off meeting of the three-year project SUSTANCE (Sustainable public transport solutions and innovative governance schemes for improving connectivity in Central Europe), co-financed by the Interreg Central Europe Programme 2021-2027.

The meeting gathered all major players of the SUSTANCE project and proved very fruitful to adopt and decide on the preliminary activities to kick start the project. This was also a first opportunity to meet and discuss with the Interreg CE Project Officer about the monitoring and evaluation plan.

In its capacity as Lead Partner, the CEI-ES provided the consortium with an overview of the structure and scope of the project, its overall management concepts, and a detailed work plan of the different activities, highlighting the interconnections between all the work packages and reaching a common understanding on the project goals.

SUSTANCE offers a strong opportunity for improving the mobility of citizens living in peripheral and cross-border areas of Central Europe with smart and sustainable public transport solutions. 8 Partners from Croatia, Hungary, Italy, and Slovenia, representing transport operators, development agencies, researchers and international organisations, will put their efforts together to assess the accessibility of the selected areas and develop an innovative methodology that will be tested to provide tangible solutions improving mobility and accessibility of public transport.

The project will ensure the transferability of its solutions beyond the project area and the promotion of sustainability over time by setting up a long-term strategy for better governance of public transport in Central Europe and a transnational cooperation network.
