Workshop in Sarajevo on sustainable blue economy: strengthening synergies between projects

On 10 October 2024, Sarajevo hosted the Workshop “Best Practices from EU Policies and Strategies to Achieve a Sustainable Blue Economy: What Path for Bosnia and Herzegovina?”, which  underscored a strategic collaboration between TRUE BLUE and ASAP, two CEI projects.

TRUE BLUE, a CEI Know-how Exchange Programme project co-financed by Italy, through the CEI Fund at the EBRD, is dedicated to enhancing regional cooperation and EU integration through training and research. It focuses on the sustainable blue economy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Albania. This project aims to transfer vital knowledge and best practices from Italy, Croatia, and Slovenia, addressing the region's pressing needs.

The ASAP project - co-funded by the European Union through the Interreg IPA Adrion Programme - focuses on safeguarding the Adriatic Sea from pollution by transferring knowledge and establishing joint response mechanisms. Building on the experiences from the North Adriatic ASAP is committed to developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for coordinated responses to environmental emergencies.

The workshop aimed to present best practices from EU policies and strategies on sustainable blue economy as well as the state-of-the-art of the blue economy in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It served as a strategic platform for knowledge exchange and cooperation, uniting efforts under TRUE BLUE and ASAP to foster sustainable development and improve environmental protection in the Adriatic region.

Within the Workshop,  participants in an ASAP focus group took an active role in assessing the sensitivity of coastal areas and activities to oil spills, providing crucial insights that will inform the project’s risk assessment. Their responses to an anonymously compiled questionnaire will help prioritize intervention strategies in case of oil spills, becoming an integral part of ASAP’s overall approach to enhancing coastal resilience.
