ASAP Steering Committee convenes in Portorož to strengthen maritime safety in Adriatic

On 25 March, the ASAP Steering Committee, led by the CEI – Executive Secretariat (CEI-ES), convened in Portorož, Slovenia, for a key project meeting hosted by the Faculty of Maritime Studies and Transport of the University of Ljubljana (UL-FPP). This gathering brought together experts, policymakers, and key stakeholders to assess progress and outline future steps in strengthening maritime safety and emergency preparedness in the Adriatic region.

Progress and Key Milestones

During the meeting, the partners reviewed significant achievements, including:

  • Stakeholder consultations in Durrës (February 18-19) – Discussions led by the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics (OGS) and the Albanian Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy (MIE) focused on identifying priorities for improving maritime safety.
  • Mapping and research of sensitive marine areas – Conducted by project partners to enhance emergency response capabilities.
  • HNS spill simulation – A crucial exercise to assess preparedness for hazardous and noxious substance (HNS) spills at sea.

These activities provided essential groundwork for the next phase of the project: real-life emergency response exercises.

Looking Ahead: Sea Exercises & Training Initiatives

The meeting also focused on upcoming training exercises designed to enhance regional cooperation in maritime emergency response. In particular, the Croatian Ministry of the Sea, Transport, and Infrastructure (MSTI) presented a joint methodology and timeline for a major international sea exercise scheduled for October 2025 in Croatia. Additionally, ATRAC (Adriatic Training and Research Centre) introduced a draft training program to prepare first responders.

To further explore cutting-edge technologies in maritime safety, attendees visited UL-FPP’s advanced simulation centres, where real-time emergency scenarios are modelled to improve response strategies.

Strengthening Regional Cooperation for a Safer Future

The ASAP project underscores the importance of cross-border collaboration, innovation, and preparedness in safeguarding the Adriatic. By bringing together public authorities, research institutions, and industry experts, the project is setting new standards for maritime safety and environmental protection.

This meeting in Portorož marked a pivotal step in aligning efforts and ensuring that all partners are ready for the next phases of the project.
