SG Antonione takes part in mid-term evaluation event of implementation of UN Sustainable Development Goals

Upon invitation from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina Elmedin Konaković, Secretary General Roberto Antonione participated in the opening of the event “Mid-term Evaluation of the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in AII member states”, held in Banja Luka (Bosnia and Herzegovina) on 5 May. The meeting was held in the framework of the Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Chairmanship of the Adriatic-Ionian Initiative (AII).

SG Antonione briefed the participants on the role of the CEI in the implementation of the UN Agenda 2030 and provided concrete examples of its activities at both institutional level and through project cooperation. He also stated the importance of accelerating the implementation of the SDGs through a multilateral approach as well as of the creation of partnerships at regional level in order to complement and support UN efforts in promoting cooperation to effectively address the SDGs.

The meeting included a regional analysis of the state of play of the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda in the Member States of the AII. Governmental representatives from the AII countries presented results and challenges regarding the SDGs’ implementation process. It also included an experts’ panel, with represenatives from the EU and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The gathering ended with a round table on the localisation of the SDGs, the conclusions of which will be presented at the High-level Political Forum 2023 to be held in New York in July.
