The Ministers in charge of Research, Innovation and Higher Education of the Member States of the Central European Initiative (CEI) are meeting in Trieste on 12-13 December,  on the occasion of the CEI Ministerial Conference on Science and Research under the Italian CEI Presidency.

Hosted by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Autonomous Region, the gathering acknowledges the recommendations included in the Trieste Declaration endorsed by the CEI Ministers of Foreign Affairs in Trieste on 12 June, 2019.

This underlines, therefore, the importance of research, innovation and higher education for addressing grand societal challenges through regional cooperation, in order to promote sustainable economic growth, increase employability and social inclusion and create new opportunities for the youth across the CEI area.

It also emphasises the decisive role international science cooperation plays in the implementation of the CEI mission. The main output of the meeting will be a “Trieste Declaration on Science” stressing the importance of cooperation among the centres of excellence and science and innovation systems across the CEI area.

Specific focus will be placed, also in collaboration with OGS - National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics on topics such as natural risk mitigation and adaptation, blue growth, capacity building and training on science diplomacy.

Key topics:

  • Science Diplomacy and Capacity Building
  • Sustainable Development Goals
  • Blue Economy
  • Natural Risks: mitigation and adaptation
  • Big Data and Artificial Intelligence
