KEP Italy: study tour for Ukrainian stakeholders on renewable energy solutions in Austria

The interest in renewable sources is strong amongst Ukrainian stakeholders, especially thanks to the current political and consequent energy crisis. In particular, biomass-based heating systems are seen as an attractive alternative to natural gas supplies from Russia. In this light, representatives of the Ukrainian State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving, the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine, the Scientific Engineering Center “Biomass”, the Renewable Energy Agency and of the UNIDO project team in Ukraine participated in a study tour on renewable solutions held in Vienna on 13 - 17 October 2014.

The event was organised within the project “Renewables´-Solutions: Transfer of Successful Renewables and Bioenergy Know-how to Ukrainian Stakeholders (Res-Sol)”, co-financed by the CEI Fund at the EBRD, contributed by Italy, in the framework of the CEI Know-How-Exchange Programme (KEP). The Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management also co-financed the event.

During the tour, the organiser and know-how provider, Austrian Energy Agency, presented successful renewable energy solutions with a special focus on biomass. The presentations covered a broad range of topics also including bioenergy in the EU framework for 2020 and 2050, the implementation of Renewable Energy Sources Directive 2009/28/EC, the work of renewable energy associations and support for biogas as a substitute for natural gas. Relevant financing options were also tackled.

The current share of biomass in Ukraine’s gross final energy consumption (GFEC, 1.8 % in 2011) could be significantly raised, pointed out Georgiy Geletukha, head of the board of Bioenergy Association of Ukraine during his presentation, citing the recently adopted Ukrainian National Renewable Energy Action. With a 10 % share in GFEC by 2030, biomass could substitute natural gas with a volume of up to 7.5 bln m³/a, he underlined.
