Kurti announced consultations to form the government in Kosovo

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JUN 23 - Kosovo's outgoing Prime Minister and leader of the Vetëvendosje Movement (LVV), Albin Kurti, won the June 7 elections, the third in 16 months. He has declared that he will initiate contacts with other political parties for a new government as soon as the election results are certified. Kurti made the statement on the sidelines of the opening of a multicultural festival in Pristina, while the Central Election Commission (CEC) waits for the appeals process to be completed before announcing the final voting results. According to preliminary results, the LVV remains the country's dominant political force, with 53 of 120 seats in the Kosovo Assembly. The Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) secured 22 seats, the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) 18, and the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) 7. With this seat distribution, Vetëvendosje has a chance to form a new government with the support of MPs from non-Serb minority communities (Roma, Turks, Bosniaks, and Egyptians), who together have 10 seats (like Serbs) in Parliament and typically ally with the party with the largest majority. The election for President of the Republic remains open. According to the Kosovo Constitution, at least 80 MPs must be present in the chamber during the first two rounds of parliamentary voting to elect him. As a result, parliamentary forces will need to reach a broader political agreement. An agreement between Vetëvendosje, non-Serb deputies, and the PDK would guarantee approximately 86 votes, while an agreement with the LDK would secure 82 votes, slightly above the constitutional threshold.
