SEE Mosaics Meeting successfully held in Budapest

The 6th SEE Mosaics Meeting, a regional conference on mosaic heritage conservation, restoration and protection was held in Budapest, at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, on 8-11 October 2024 under the topic “Mosaics from 1900’s – Modern materials, new problems”.

During the three-day meeting, presentations were made by experts in the field of preservation of cultural heritage and art-historians coming from several CEI countries (Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, North-Macedonia, Ukraine, Italy) as well as from other countries (Austria, Belgium, France, Georgia).

The analysis presented during the meeting provided a relevant insight of the new challenges in mosaic heritage preservation also concerning the ways and means to make it more functional.

The theoretical part was complemented with a series of study visits in Budapest and in the countryside. This allowed the participants to examine the mosaic art in a variety of contexts, from its heyday in architectural mosaic art to its application in the industry, but also to analyse contemporary realisation in historical sites.

Overall, the event represented a valuable opportunity for exchanging experiences and developing professional networks in the CEI region.

The conference was supported by: CEI-Cooperation Fund; National Cultural Fund of Hungary, National Research, Development and Innovation Office, Hungary; and MentArtis and Mapei companies.

SEE Mosaics is a regional project that aims at raising awareness on the needs for more organised protection of mosaic heritage in Southeast and Central Europe. It also strives at reinforcing mosaic conservation profession in the region and highlights the importance of a coordinated approach among the partners.
