On 27 January, the CEI organised and hosted a workshop on improving environmental conditions in and around Mediterranean ports in Piraeus, Greece. The event was held within the framework of the TREASURE project, which is funded under the Interreg Euro-MED Programme. The aim of the project is to enhance environmental quality in Mediterranean port areas by mitigating and reducing sediment and water pollution. During the workshop, project partners presented the innovative solutions developed and tested within TREASURE to improve environmental performance in port areas. In addition, the TREASURE Governance Model for environmental improvements in ports was introduced. This model is based on collaborative approaches and shared decision-making frameworks. In addition, the assessment procedures for the tested solutions were illustrated through the TREASURE hazard and management matrix, along with key findings from sampling analyses carried out by project partners in their respective ports.
The workshop brought together a wide community of experts and stakeholders with the objective of encouraging the replication and upscaling of effective environmental approaches in port areas.
This was followed by the Innovative Solutions Workshop on Waste Management in Ports, during which solution providers selected through the TREASURE call for interest pitched their innovative techniques for pollution remediation in port environments. Efficient waste management is a key component of environmental sustainability in ports, as it helps reduce pollution, improve resource efficiency, and ensure compliance with international maritime regulations. Solutions developed by BIO-UV Group, T1 Solutions SB, DND Biotech, OGS, and Neo-Eco were presented.
The Piraeus Port Authority also organised a guided site visit to the port, offering participants the opportunity to learn more about port management practices and ongoing efforts to improve environmental performance.
On 28 January, TREASURE partners met to discuss the preliminary testing results of the selected solutions aimed at mitigating the environmental issues identified in their ports. Sampling analyses, as well as challenges related to testing and monitoring activities, were also addressed.
The final project meeting will take place in Toulon (France) in mid-June.
