Promoting sustainable tourism and digital nomadism in vulnerable rural areas

On 23–24 May 2025, the regional conference "Promoting Young Digital Nomads to Protect Nature and Enhance Sustainable Tourism in Vulnerable Rural Areas" was held in Demir Kapija, Republic of North Macedonia. The event brought together representatives of local authorities, civil society organisations, geoparks, tourism experts and digital nomads from CEI countries.

The event aimed to strengthen local capacities and foster cross-border exchange on sustainable tourism and digital nomadism as tools to revitalise rural and underdeveloped areas, enhance resilience and create inclusive economic opportunities for local communities.

The programme, organised by NGO Stena Stenae, combined expert contributions and interactive discussions to examine how digital nomadism can support balanced territorial development and counter depopulation trends. Participants discussed environmentally responsible tourism models, the use of digital platforms to increase the visibility of rural destinations, and the role of adequate infrastructure and local services in attracting remote workers.

Case studies from various European countries demonstrate how digital nomad-led initiatives can strengthen local economies while preserving natural and cultural heritage. A dedicated workshop enabled participants to identify challenges and outline practical pathways for sustainable local growth, while networking activities fostered future cooperation.

“Migration from rural to urban areas has strained cities, increasing demand for services and resources while exacerbating inequality, unemployment and climate change. Rural areas play a crucial role in food production and resource management. Transforming rural and underdeveloped areas into smart, liveable places is essential for creating resilient communities.

The CEI supports initiatives to address these challenges, including improving infrastructure, digitalisation, water management, waste treatment and tourism development. The sustainable transformation of cities and communities is also a priority on the CEI agenda, with a focus on Ukraine.”

By promoting knowledge exchange and regional collaboration, the initiative contributed to advancing sustainable tourism, supporting rural resilience and encouraging inclusive local development across the CEI region.
