The project “Promoting Capacity Building in Serbia through the Transfer of Technical Knowledge and Environmental Protection Measures in the Beekeeping Sector” is advancing towards its goal of supporting sustainable beekeeping and environmental protection in Serbia.
Led by the Council for Agricultural Research and Economics (CREA, Italy) with the University of Novi Sad – Faculty of Agriculture (Serbia), the initiative introduces digital hive-monitoring technologies while fostering knowledge exchange between Italy and Serbia. Co-financed in the framework of the Know-how Exchange Programme supported by Italy through the CEI Fund at the EBRD, the project addresses challenges such as pesticide use, pollution, and climate change, which threaten bee populations and honey production.
Key milestones have already been achieved: the launch of the trilingual project website, the kick-off meeting in Rome, and the installation of three digital beehives in Novi Sad. Students have been trained both in class and in the field, gaining direct experience with systems that monitor hive weight and temperature.
In 2025, the technology was upgraded to ensure reliability despite internet or electricity interruptions, and a mid-term meeting in Novi Sad allowed partners to review progress and strengthen collaboration. A promotional video has also been released, showcasing the project’s activities and broadening its outreach.
With these achievements, the project is paving the way for stronger research cooperation, wider adoption of sustainable practices, and greater awareness among Serbian beekeepers and policymakers.
