Study on science diplomacy in CEI Member States presented at UNESCO

The main results and conclusions included in the report “Connecting science and diplomacy in Central, Eastern and Southeastern European countries” - elaborated by the Department of Social and Political Sciences of the University of Trieste in cooperation with the CEI-Executive Secretariat - were presented at the “Workshop on Science Diplomacy Training”, an event organised by the EU Science Diplomacy Alliance in partnership with UNESCO, held in Paris on 27 March 2025.

This research - financed by the Autonomous Region Friuli Venezia Giulia in the context of its cooperation with the CEI - provides for a thorough overview of the governance of science diplomacy in the target region, as well as of the knowledge and skills needed to train the future “science diplomats”.

The audience of the Workshop, mainly composed of diplomats, scientists, civil servants, experts and practitioners at EU and global level, demonstrated great interest in the key take-aways of the research, as well as in its geographical focus. Indeed, the CEI membership represents a valuable arena where the development of science diplomacy can be supported, thus contributing to a better understanding of the connections between international science cooperation, technological advances and foreign policy.
