Slovenian PM calls for de-recognition of Palestine, but President objects

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JUN 30 - Slovenia's conservative Prime Minister, Janez Janša, has hinted in statements to the Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom that he intends to move the Slovenian embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, as the Trump administration and other countries have done. He also wants to freeze the recognition of the State of Palestine, which was formalised by the previous government led by progressive Robert Golob, as it "does not comply" with Slovenian law. President Nataša Pirc Musar's position on Palestine, international law, and the two-state solution remains "clear and unchanged," following Ljubljana's decision to recognise the State of Palestine on June 4, 2024. Pirc Musar also stated that she had not been formally informed by the government of any initiative to reconsider this decision, and went on to say that decisions on state recognition are made by Parliament based on the government's proposal, whereas the head of state can only express his or her own views.
