EU presents a financial package for Montenegro's accession

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JUN 30 - The European Commission has approved a financial package outlining the budgetary provisions that will apply to Montenegro once it has completed its EU accession process. The proposal, which will now be reviewed by the EU Council, marks another step forward in the final phase of accession negotiations, following the member states' agreement to begin drafting the Accession Treaty. The package, according to an EU executive statement, aims to support the conclusion of Chapter 33 of the negotiations, which deals with financial and budgetary provisions and outlines future financial allocations for Podgorica within the European budget. The goal is to ensure a smooth transition from pre-accession assistance instruments to regular EU funds, minimising funding disruptions. According to Brussels, the package will enable Montenegro to fully participate in EU policies and the EU budget, as both a beneficiary and a contributor, promoting economic convergence, growth, and deeper integration into the single market. "We are preparing for an orderly accession, putting Montenegro, the Member States, and the European institutions in a position to be ready," said Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who described today's decision as "another concrete step towards Montenegro's future" in the EU.
