We support Ukraine joining the EU, but the Balkans come first: Tajani

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JUN 1 - "We support Ukraine's future accession to the European Union, but it must first and foremost combat corruption. There must be a timetable, not too long, that allows this country to comply with European regulations. We are willing to assist," and to President Zelensky, "I proposed that the Guardia di Finanza contribute to the fight against Ukrainian corruption, possibly by training the police. But we must also remember that some countries, particularly those in the Western Balkans, such as Albania and Montenegro, have been waiting for a long time to join the European Union. As a result, I believe it is appropriate to place our trust in the Balkans, first and foremost, followed by Ukraine." Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said this during an interview with Canale 5's Morning News. Commenting on the drone crash in Romania, he stated, "I hope that a widening of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict does not occur. We're working on it, and I'm confident it won't happen. However, the Russian Federation's actions are dangerous. I believe it is putting NATO and Europe to the test," he added. "What happened is unacceptable, and Russia, if it wants to reach an agreement, as it claims, cannot continue to take an aggressive stance, even against the Ukrainian civilian population, and by crossing the war zone into Europe," the Deputy Prime Minister emphasised, before calling for increased European defence.
