Italy, France, and Austria call on the EU to strengthen and expand origin labelling

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, MAY 26 - A growing number of EU countries support strengthening and expanding the mandatory origin labelling system to include "as many food products as possible." This is the request made to the European Commission by a group of EU countries led by Italy, Austria, and France during the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council, which is currently taking place in Brussels. The three capitals, with the support of Bulgaria, Croatia, Finland, Greece, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, and Spain, called for an informal meeting of European agriculture ministers to revisit the issue raised in January. The twelve signatories complained that "transparency for consumers and regulatory equality between European and non-European producers remains insufficient." As a result, the European Commission has been urged to speed up the revision of the European Regulation on consumer food information in order to "ensure greater transparency for consumers, strengthen the position of European farmers, and support EU food sovereignty." According to the briefing note, the measure will "enable consumers to make informed purchasing choices, strengthen the position of European farmers in the food supply chain, and contribute to improving food sovereignty and strengthening the resilience of European agriculture."
