(ANSA-AFP) - ATHENS, MAY 25 - Twenty people were arrested on Monday on the Greek island of Crete as part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged embezzlement of millions of euros in European Union agricultural subsidies, Greek police said. Among those detained in the operation are two accountants and three heads of administrative centres managing applications for agricultural subsidies on the island, the police said. The authorities said suspects had embezzled an estimated three million euros ($3.5 million) in farm subsidies. Dozens of people had been arrested in October in an earlier round of raids connected to the scandal which has rocked Greece over the past year. A large number of suspected fraud cases come from Crete, the country's largest island, where agriculture, along with tourism, is one of the main economic activities. Eleven ruling party MPs last month had their parliamentary immunity lifted as part of this investigation, spearheaded by the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO). The EPPO announced last year that it was investigating "massive and systematic" fraud and "money laundering activities" linked to the granting of European agricultural subsidies to Greek farmers, with losses estimated at more than 19 million euros, according to the preliminary investigation. The scandal led to the resignation of three ministers and several deputy ministers from the conservative government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis. (ANSA-AFP).
