Former Greek Prime Minister Tsipras will unveil his new party on May 26th

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, MAY 18 - Former Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has announced that he will officially launch his new political party on May 26. The announcement was made via a video posted on social media, featuring two children from behind in a stadium wearing football jerseys with the numbers 26 and 5 (the party's launch date). The video's caption reads, "The time is now." On May 1, Tsipras unveiled the new party's manifesto for "a governing left," which reaffirmed the goal of uniting "the three main currents of the contemporary left: the social democrats, the radical left, and the environmental movement." After leading Greece through the turbulent years of the debt crisis, Tsipras resigned as president of Syriza, the radical left party, in 2023, following the most recent national election defeat. His return to politics comes amid media speculation about possible snap elections next autumn, despite Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' repeated assertions that the elections will take place in 2027, when the legislative term expires.
