(ANSA) - BELGRADE, APR 30 - Gorizia Mayor Rodolfo Ziberna has expressed "serious concerns" about the seismic and operational safety of the Krško Nuclear Power Plant in Slovenia, calling for greater transparency and cross-border cooperation. In a letter, addressed to the Italian Prime Minister's Office, relevant ministries, and the European Commission, among others, Ziberna emphasises the plant's proximity to the region and its age, having been in operation for over 40 years. The mayor noted that any accidents could quickly affect Friuli Venezia Giulia as well. Ziberna clarified that his stance on nuclear energy is not ideological but rather based on the precautionary principle, particularly in light of recent scientific studies that highlight potential critical issues related to the seismic risk in the area. As a result, official reassurances, backed up by updated data, have been requested, as has the potential involvement of Italian experts in monitoring systems. One of the requests made was for Italy and Slovenia to update and share emergency plans in order to ensure a coordinated response. "Citizen safety knows no borders," the mayor says, expressing his hope for an institutional dialogue that can turn concerns into a model for European cooperation. (ANSA).
