Ryanair has asked the Italian government to suspend EES for passports until September

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, APR 30 - Ryanair is urging the Italian government to postpone the implementation of the Entry/Exit System (EES) for EU passport control until September to ensure that passengers "are not forced to experience unnecessarily long delays in passport control queues during the peak summer season." "Despite knowing for more than three years that the EES would be fully operational on April 10, 2026, the Italian authorities have failed to ensure adequate staffing, system preparation, or workstation installation," the Irish airline stated. "As a result, passengers are experiencing long lines at passport control and, in some cases, missing flights. Queue wait times at Bergamo, Malpensa, Fiumicino, Ciampino, Venice, Turin, Palermo, Pisa, and Naples airports have already exceeded 1-2 hours, due to staff shortages and system malfunctions." Ryanair has written to the ministers of the 29 EES countries, including Matteo Piantedosi, urging them to follow Greece's example and suspend the EES until September. "Governments throughout Europe are attempting to implement an incomplete IT system in the midst of the busiest travel season of the year, and passengers are paying the price," said Chief Operations Officer Neal McMahon. "The solution is straightforward and already enshrined in EU law (Regulation (EU) 2025/1534): governments should suspend the EES until September, when the peak summer travel season has passed."
