Trade unions Fvg and Slovenia, Schengen suspension unnecessary and harmful

(ANSA) - TRIESTE, APR 29 - "The decision to suspend Schengen is purely propagandistic, unnecessary and harmful to everyone, especially border workers, who see their right to free movement restricted." This was argued by the trade unions of Fvg and Slovenia, which today held their traditional meeting at the Rabuiese-Skofije border crossing ahead of May Day. "It is a costly and unjustified measure that prevents the normal flow of people and ideas, which are fundamental for peaceful and fruitful cooperation between peoples," added Roberto Treu, president of the Friuli Venezia Giulia-Slovenia Interregional Trade Union Council. Therefore, returning to normalcy, the document signed by the Csi Fvg-Slo says, "is necessary to guarantee workers a more dignified life, without discrimination or obstacles to their right to move and work." Closing borders "not only aggravates people's living conditions, but also damages the labor market, which becomes more fragmented and less inclusive." There is a need to "strengthen cross-border cooperation and guarantee workers' rights, which are the basis of any just and prosperous society," calling on the governments of Italy and Slovenia "to resume dialogue and resolve unresolved issues affecting border crossers, calling for a regulated and inclusive labor market." Wars and tensions were also discussed: "It is more necessary than ever that international law be restored and that populations be guaranteed a dignified and sustainable future, which only the end of conflicts can guarantee." In this, "fundamental" for the CIS is "the role of the European Union and major international bodies such as the UN." (ANSA).
