CPRs in Albania are compliant, but migrants' rights must be protected

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, APR 23 - The Italy-Albania protocol is "compatible" with EU rules on repatriation and asylum, as long as "migrants' rights are fully protected." This is the position of Nicholas Emiliou, Advocate General of the European Court of Justice, in a non-binding opinion that anticipates the Luxembourg courts' future ruling. The lawyer emphasises that EU law "does not prevent" a country from establishing" so-called CPRs "outside its territory, but the State must still "respect all the guarantees provided," including the right to legal assistance, linguistic interpretation, and contact with family members and authorities. Minors and vulnerable individuals must receive special attention. (ANSA).
