Brenner Base Tunnel, German access route under threat

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, APR 20 - Not only could the Brenner Base Tunnel be delayed by two years, pushing its completion date to 2034. The long-awaited shift of freight traffic to rail on the Brenner axis is jeopardised by another delay in the construction of the German access route. According to the Tiroler Tageszeitung, the Bavarian government has rejected Deutsche Bahn's proposed 50-kilometer route to Kufstein. The CSU and Freie Wähler parties are calling for more tunnel sections, and the German Bundestag's review of the €15 billion project, which was supposed to take place this spring, has been pushed back once more. According to the newspaper, putting the upgraded section into service before 2050 is increasingly unrealistic. There are fears that a bottleneck will limit the full use of the Brenner Base Tunnel, which is regarded as one of Europe's most important infrastructure projects. (ANSA).
