Croatian president says Orban's defeat shows Hungary is democratic

(ANSA) - ZAGREB, 13 APR - Yesterday's election, with Peter Magyar's victory and the clear defeat of Viktor Orban's Fidesz, shows that Hungary is a "functioning electoral democracy." So said Croatian President Zoran Milanović, who comes from a social democratic background but, in recent years, has partly shared Orbán's criticism of Brussels' policy on the conflict in Ukraine. "A man who until yesterday was a satrap and a tyrant lost the election convincingly," Milanović acknowledged. Last night, Croatian conservative Prime Minister Andrej Plenković was among the first European political leaders to congratulate Magyar. "Our goal now is to improve political dialogue, deepen economic and energy cooperation, and resolve outstanding issues in a spirit of good neighborliness and partnership," Plenković stressed, recalling that his party, the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), and Magyar's Tisza party are both members of the European People's Party (EPP), where they have long worked together.
