(ANSA) - BELGRADE, APR 6 - Albin Kurti, Kosovo's Prime Minister, and Lumir Abdixhiku, the leader of the opposition Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), met to discuss the country's presidency in an effort to avoid holding new elections. This meeting occurred after President Vjosa Osmani's term officially ended over the weekend. As required by the Constitution, she was replaced by Albulena Haxhiu, the Speaker of Parliament. Parliament is now expected to select a new head of state by April 28. Kurti emphasised that new early elections should be avoided, and Abdixhiku confirmed that efforts are being made to find a solution. For months, Kosovo's major parties have been unable to agree on a single presidential candidate. Kurti's left-leaning nationalist party, Vetëvendosje Movement (LVV), won the snap elections on December 28 by a landslide. However, their 57 out of 120 seats in the National Assembly are insufficient to elect a president, as at least 80 votes are required in the first voting sessions. (ANSA).
