War weighs on Italy's Easter holidays: Assoturismo

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, APR 2 - Easter holidays are mixed, with Italy remaining a popular destination, but the ongoing conflict in the Middle East is having an impact. The estimated number of overnight stays is 14.1 million, a 1.3% decrease from the previous year, or 200,000 fewer. Foreign tourists make up 58.9% of the market, accounting for 8.3 million overnight stays (-1.4%), while Italians account for 5.8 million overnight stays (-1.2%). These are the key findings of a survey of 1,087 Italian hospitality businesses conducted by the Florence-based Centro Studi Turistici for Assoturismo Confesercenti. The Easter holidays, which have traditionally been the driving force behind the spring season, are being impacted this year by a strong climate of geopolitical instability. All Italian macro-regions are expected to contract, with the South and Islands (-2.0%) and Central Italy (-1.8%) experiencing the steepest declines. Tourist flows to mountain resorts are expected to remain relatively stable, thanks to foreign markets, while art cities remain important destinations, despite an estimated 0.8% decline. Foreign visitors are once again fuelling Easter tourism in Italy. Visitor arrivals from Austria, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary are on the rise, while those from the United States, Canada, Australia, Great Britain, China, Japan, India, and South Korea are declining. Tourists from Belgium, Brazil, Spain, and Scandinavia remain stable. (ANSA).
