(ANSA-AFP) - ROME, MAR 24 - Greek media group Antenna announced Monday it had acquired Italian left-wing daily La Repubblica from billionaire John Elkann's Exor Group. Antenna has acquired 100 percent of Exor's GEDI editorial group, which owns La Repubblica and several radio stations among its media outlets. The deal comes just weeks after GEDI announced the sale of its other leading newspaper, La Stampa, to a regional media group, SAE. "Antenna's acquisition of GEDI will strengthen a leading Italy-based independent news and entertainment organisation with broad international reach and global appeal," the Greek group said in a statement. It promised to ensure the company's editorial independence and to invest new capital into La Repubblica, which was founded in 1976. Rumours of the newspaper sales had sparked weeks of industrial action at Exor amid concerns over possible job cuts. Elkann, the grandson of famous Italian industrialist Gianni Agnelli, is also the chairman of Italian-US-French car giant Stellantis, whose brands include Jeep and Fiat. (ANSA-AFP).
