Hungary will block new EU sanctions against Moscow tomorrow

(ANSA) - BRUXELLES, FEB 22 - "Tomorrow, at the Foreign Affairs Council, the EU intends to adopt the 20th sanctions package. Hungary will block it. Until Ukraine resumes oil transit to Hungary and Slovakia through the Druzhba pipeline, we will not allow important decisions for Kiev to go forward." This was announced on X by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó. This week the Ukrainians decided not to resume crude oil supplies to Hungary, Szijjártó explained according to what was summarized in another post on X by Hungarian government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs. The minister called the move "a clear political blackmail aimed at causing a fuel price increase to 1,000 forints and supply disruptions in the run-up to the parliamentary elections." And he "stressed that Hungary has released part of its strategic oil reserves and has started securing maritime supplies already en route," Kovacs added. In response, the spokesman reported, "Hungary has stopped diesel exports to Ukraine, which previously accounted for about 10 percent of its imports, and has decided to block the 90 billion euro military aid package. Until the Ukrainians resume crude oil supplies to Hungary, we will block important decisions for Ukraine." "As for electricity exports, which account for nearly half of Ukraine's imports, Foreign Minister Szijjártó urged caution, pointing out that suspension of supplies would mainly affect families in Transcarpathia. Our dispute is not with the Ukrainian people, but with the Ukrainian state, the Ukrainian government, and President Zelensky," Kovacs pointed out. (ANSA).
