Vucic welcomes new Bosnian Serb nationalist President Karan

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, FEB 9 - Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić expressed his support for nationalist candidate Siniša Karan, who won the presidential election in Bosnia's Republika Srpska (RS) as Milorad Dodik's successor. Karan won with a margin of about 11,000 votes after a partial rerun of the early presidential vote held on November 23rd at 136 polling stations yesterday. The nationalist Party of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD) announced its candidate's victory shortly after the polls closed on Sunday evening. Karan spoke to the audience, emphasising that this victory represents the defence of the people's right to decide their own destiny: "This is a clear response from the people to attempts to abuse judicial institutions," Karan said, adding that his election preserved Serbian sovereignty.
