Solar and wind power set record in EU, surpassing fossil fuels for electricity: Ember

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JAN 22 - Wind and solar generated 30% more electricity in the EU than fossil fuels (29%), setting a record. This information comes from the European Electricity Review, published by the energy think tank Ember, which states that, despite the rapid acceleration of the transition, Italy, along with Germany, is among the countries hardest hit by imported petrol costs. Solar power increased by more than a fifth (+20.1%) for the fourth consecutive year, reaching a record 13% of EU electricity production, surpassing coal and hydroelectricity. The increase was widespread across the EU27: in Hungary, Cyprus, Greece, Spain, and the Netherlands, photovoltaic power accounted for more than a fifth of electricity, while in Italy, the share increased 24% in a year, reaching 17%. Wind power remained the EU's second-largest source of electricity, with 17%. Overall, according to the report, renewables generated 48% of Europe's electricity, despite "atypical" weather conditions that penalised hydroelectricity (-12%) and, to a lesser extent, wind power (-2%), favouring solar.
