$660,000 raised in Poland to purchase generators for Ukraine

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JAN 19 - A volunteer fundraising platform in Poland has raised more than 2.4 million zlotys (approximately $660,000) to buy generators for Kiev, organisers announced, as Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure continue due to the harsh winter. The Kyiv Independent reported the news. The fundraiser, called "Heat from Poland for Kiev," initially aimed to raise 400,000 zlotys ($110,000) for the purchase of generators. After quickly reaching that goal, organisers increased the collection to 2 million zlotys ($550,000), which was later surpassed, with donations totalling over 2.4 million zlotys. "The Polish response has exceeded our expectations," the organisers reported. "You have demonstrated that you are concerned about the fate of your neighbours. We can accomplish far more than we expected. People live in basements and unheated apartments. Because of the lack of electricity, they are unable to prepare a hot meal, their phones run out of battery, and they lose contact with their loved ones during attacks." (ANSA).
