Serbia and Slovakia strengthen bilateral cooperation

(ANSA) - BELGRADO, DEC 21 - Serbia and Slovakia's willingness to extend and intensify bilateral cooperation in all fields emerged in talks held today in Belgrade by Presidents Aleksandar Vucic and Peter Pellegrini. Speaking at a press conference, Vucic referred in particular to the interest in developing cooperation in the field of defense and military industry, nuclear energy and new Slovak investments in joint projects, starting with infrastructure projects. Electricity is much cheaper in Slovakia, he noted, thanks to the nuclear power plants operating in the country, which is why Belgrade would like Bratislava to contribute and provide technical and training assistance in the development of nuclear power in Serbia as well. In this regard, President Pellegrini said that Slovakia is ready to build nuclear power plants in Serbia, providing everything it has in terms of knowledge and operational technique. There are two nuclear power plants in Slovakia, producing between 50 percent and 60 percent of the country's electricity needs. Vucic - who received an invitation to pay an official visit to Bratislava - expressed thanks for Slovakia's support for Serbia's European path and respect for its territorial integrity against Kosovo's independence. Slovakia is among the five EU countries that do not recognize independent Kosovo, with Spain, Romania, Greece and Cyprus. Today's meeting also discussed the situation of the Slovak minority residing in northern Serbia, where Presidents Pilgrims and Vucic will travel tomorrow. (ANSA).
