Cities and universities explore future-oriented solutions for resilient regions

From 17 to 19 September 2025, the 11th International KRAFT and Blue Sky Conference was held in Kőszeg, Hungary. The event brought together scientists, policymakers, researchers and representatives of universities and cultural institutions from CEI countries and beyond, with the purpose to encourage interdisciplinary dialogue on regional development and sustainability, with a view to strengthening cooperation between cities, universities and research centres in addressing long-term territorial and global challenges.

The programme was organised within the KRAFT Conference series, which was launched in 2015. It combines sessions on creative urban development and regional resilience with Blue Sky panels focusing on global trends such as futurology, artificial intelligence and crisis management. The Conference provided a valuable opportunity for reflection on the evolving role of regions, cities and academic institutions in an increasingly complex environment.

Discussions addressed a range of topics, including innovation in education, sustainable regional development, social and environmental risks, cultural heritage and collective memory, and the future of rural and peripheral areas. International contributions were received that provided valuable comparative perspectives and forward-looking approaches to strengthening territorial resilience.

“Migration from rural to urban areas has strained cities, increasing demand for services and resources while exacerbating issues such as inequality, unemployment and climate change. Rural areas play a crucial role in food production and resource management. Transforming rural and underdeveloped areas into smart, liveable places is essential for creating resilient communities.”

In addition to academic debates, the programme featured cultural and public activities, emphasising the importance of creativity and cultural exchange in fostering inclusive and sustainable futures. The Conference contributed to advancing dialogue on resilient regional development across the CEI region by linking research, policy and practice.
