Italy through the CEI Fund at the EBRD is supporting the Know-how Exchange Programme project “CEI Support to Technology Transfer for Hospitals in Albania and North Macedonia (ALBAU-TT-CRO)”. This initiative aims to enhance cancer diagnostics and promote healthcare innovation in Albania and North Macedonia, where national health systems face persistent challenges due to limited research and development infrastructure.
Led by the Centro di Riferimento Oncologico di Aviano (CRO - Italy), the project focuses on transferring advanced technologies and know-how to the University Hospital Center “Mother Teresa” in Tirana and the Business Accelerator UKIM in Skopje. The goal is to empower local healthcare providers and innovation hubs to deliver better, more accessible cancer care.
A key component of the project is the implementation of telepathology, which enables remote diagnosis, international collaboration among pathologists, and the use of digital and AI-assisted tools to ensure accurate and timely cancer diagnostics. This approach helps reduce disparities in healthcare access and limits the need for patients to travel abroad for specialized care.
The project’s first activities are currently focused on Albania through the launch of “MoMo – Mondays for Mother Teresa Hospitals”, a five-part webinar series dedicated to technology transfer and digital health featuring international experts. The series began on Monday, 3 November 2025, and continues every Monday until 1 December 2025.
In addition to its medical and scientific goals, ALBAU-TT-CRO promotes innovation and entrepreneurship through initiatives such as a hackathon, bringing together researchers, clinicians, and tech entrepreneurs from Albania, North Macedonia, and Italy to co-create digital health solutions tailored to regional needs. The project ultimately seeks to enhance cancer diagnostics and treatment, strengthen public-private collaboration, reduce medical migration, and foster a more equitable, efficient, and technology-driven healthcare system in the Western Balkans.
Participation in the “MoMo – Mondays for Mother Teresa Hospitals” is free and open to all interested professionals.
