Organic farming is considered a pillar to environmental and food sustainable development at European level. Being a candidate country for membership in the European Union, Montenegro planned within the next two years to proceed with the harmonisation of the national legislation with the relevant EU acquis.

One of these planned actions is the improvement of agriculture competitiveness through the establishment of a regulatory framework for the production of agricultural and food organic products.

The Law on Organic Production, harmonized with the Regulation (EU) 2018/848, is planned to be adopted soon. In this context, the initiative led by the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari (CIHEAM Bari), aims to improve the legislative framework in order to promote best practices in organic production, and to enhance the capacities of SMEs to position their products on the national and international market.

Project goals will be reached by enhancing the skills and capacities of public officers from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management of Montenegro in achieving and harmonizing the national legislation on organic food production, with the EU acquis.
