(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 10 - The countries of the Friends of the Balkans Group met today in Rome and adopted a political document promoted by Italy on future accession treaties. According to the Farnesina, the "Charter of Rome" aims to "preserve the credibility, predictability, and unity of the enlargement process." The text reaffirms the principle of full equality among member states following accession, while excluding models of differentiated participation or "second-tier" membership. The importance of maintaining a clear and stable final goal for candidate countries' European journeys is emphasised, while avoiding new levels of conditionality. Any safeguard clauses and transitional measures, it is explained, must be objective, proportionate, temporary, and tailored to each country's specific needs. (ANSA).
