EU sources say there's no sign of opening a new negotiating chapter with Serbia

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JUL 8 - There was no sign of the opening of Cluster 3 of Serbia's accession negotiations with the European Union at the meeting of the Twenty-seven Ambassadors. A diplomatic source told ANSA that the necessary consensus among member states had not been reached. The rotating presidency of the EU Council acknowledged this, but did not say when or if the issue would be brought back to the agenda. During the meeting, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Belgium, Estonia, Lithuania, Bulgaria, and Croatia spoke out "clearly and explicitly" against the opening of Cluster 3, citing ongoing concerns about the rule of law, Belgrade's failure to comply with EU sanctions against Russia, and, more broadly, Serbia's commitment to the European path. Denmark, Luxembourg, and Latvia took a less clear stance, but still expressed reservations about the same issues, including concerns about media freedom.om. The European Commission has been recommending the opening of Cluster 3 for over four years and has recently prepared a new document highlighting Serbia's progress on a number of dossiers deemed critical to the accession process.
