European leaders in Montenegro will meet for dinner before the EU-Balkans summit

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JUN 4 - The EU-Western Balkans Summit begins this evening with an informal dinner hosted by Montenegrin President Jakov Milatovic and culminates tomorrow. The summit is a significant step forward on the enlargement dossier, which also includes Ukraine and Moldova, and will be one of the priority issues at the 27-member summit on June 18-19. The EU-Balkans summit, which will take place in the seaside resort of Tivat, a few kilometres from the Bay of Kotor, will be attended by a large number of European leaders, including Giorgia Meloni, Emmanuel Macron, Friedrich Merz, Pedro Sanchez, and Donald Tusk, as well as Rob Jetten of the Netherlands, Mette Frederiksen of Denmark, and Cyprus's current EU president, Nikos Christodoulides. Naturally, the heads of the EU institutions will be present, including European Council President Antonio Costa, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola. The meeting occurs just hours before the start of the process for opening "cluster 1" in the accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova. The dossier has accelerated sharply with the arrival of Hungary's new leader, Peter Magyar: Kiev will be a surprise guest at the Tivat summit, which will also discuss the status of the two Balkan countries closest to joining the Union—host country Montenegro and Albania. Leaders from Romania, Estonia, Malta, Ireland, Portugal, Bulgaria, Austria, Croatia, Ireland, Belgium, the Czech Republic, and Lithuania will be at the Regent Hotel in Tivat's marina. The meeting also marks Janez Jansa's return to the European table, after recently resuming his leadership of Slovenia. (ANSA).
