Austria, new railway with 33k-long-tunnel speeds up connections

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, DEC 12 - Austria has opened a new railway line that includes one of the world's longest railway tunnels, according to the news agency DPA. The Koralm Railway, which is 130 kilometres long, connects the cities of Graz and Klagenfurt and is expected to significantly reduce travel times and improve rail connections between northern and southern Europe. The train journey between the two southern state capitals now takes 41 minutes, down from nearly three hours by train and two hours by bus, the news agency said.The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) estimates the project costs atapproximately €5.9 billion, with the European Union contributing over €600 million. The Koralm Tunnel, 33 kilometres long and one of the world's longest railway tunnels, is the line's focal point, according to DPA. (ANSA).
