Lithuania, president appoints new prime minister

(ANSA-AFP) - VILNIUS, AUG 14 - Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda on Thursday appointed Social Democratic MP Inga Ruginiene to the post of prime minister, following the resignation of the former head of government, who was hit by a corruption investigation. "Some details of Ruginiene's biography deserve special attention. That is why our first meeting lasted two hours, which is very challenging," Nauseda told Lithuanian public television LRT after meeting with the candidate. Ruginiene has already been criticized for having relatives in Russia, whom she first visited in 2015 and 2018, but she told the press that she has not received any more visits, adding that she has always supported Ukraine in the face of Russia's invasion from 2022. Parliament has yet to approve Ruginiene and his program and new cabinet, after the coalition government led by Gintautas Paluckas was dissolved last week. The coalition led by the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSPD) includes the center-left Democrats In the Name of Lithuania and the populist Dawn on the Niémen party. LSDP initiated consultations with other parties after In the Name of Lithuania declared that it could no longer cooperate with the third partner. The Financial Crimes Surveillance Authority (FNTT) on Thursday arrested Paluckas' brother and placed four other people in detention as part of an investigation into businesses linked to the former premier minister. No charges have been filed against Paluckas. Inga Ruginiene, 44, has previously held the positions of vice-president of the European Trade Union Confederation and director of the Trade Union Confederation of Lithuania. She was first elected to Parliament last year. ben/dt/str/bo/cm/ (ANSA-AFP).
