Workshop on smart specialisation strategy in field of biotechnologies held in Bratislava

The JRC-EC - CEI – ICGEB European Workshop on “Smart Specialization Strategy in the Field of Biotechnologies in Europe: A Challenge for CEE Region” was organised in Bratislava on 4-6 September.
 
The overall event aimed at promoting the Research and Innovation Smart Specialization Strategy (RIS3) with a focus on high-tech companies in CEE countries dealing with Biotechnology ranging from industrial biotechnology, biobased industries and bioeconomy, to environmental, agro-food biotechnology as well as medicinal and pharma biotechnologies.
 
More than 104 experts from 22 European countries (including 13 CEE countries and several international organizations: EC, CEI, JRC- EC and ICGEB) attended the event. Around 50 lectures were presented together with 19 posters. The Book of Abstracts provides a brief overview of the presented contributions.
 
In summary, the Workshop aimed at providing recommendations towards better research cooperation at regional and European level in the framework of smart specialisation in biotechnology with the goal to increase competitiveness and impact on related biotech industries. A need for strengthening cooperation as well as a deeper involvement of CEE countries including the pre-accession countries of CEE region within various European research programmes (i.e. Danube initiative, INTERREG, EBTNA, etc.) was underlined. The necessity of enhancing cooperation with international organisations such as JRC-EC, the ICGEB, the CEI and others was also highlighted.
