The Workshop Connecting the Adriatic-Ionian Region through Advanced Technology and Training for the Energy Transition in the Port Sector was held in Trieste on 28 November 2024 convening stakeholders from across the Adriatic-Ionian region to foster sustainability, connectivity, and competitiveness in the port sector.
Organised by the CEI in partnership with the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, the event brought together experts, North Adriatic Ports Association (NAPA) representatives, and international partners committed to shaping a greener and more resilient future for the region.
CEI Secretary General Roberto Antonione opened the workshop emphasising its significance in addressing key regional challenges:
This workshop demonstrates the CEI’s commitment to fostering cooperation, sustainable development, and technological innovation in the Adriatic-Ionian region, said Antonione.
By uniting stakeholders around a shared vision of sustainability and advanced training, we aim to create a strong foundation for an energy transition that not only respects environmental standards but also strengthens the competitiveness of our ports and the economic well-being of our communities.
Antonione’s remarks were followed by greetings from Regional Councillor Fabio Scoccimarro, who highlighted the importance of regional collaboration in achieving ambitious environmental and economic goals. Trieste’s Maritime Authority Director, Commander Luciano Del Prete, and Commissioner Vittorio Torbianelli of the Port of Trieste also attended, reaffirming their commitment to integrating sustainability and technological advancement in the port sector.
The workshop focused on two main objectives: identifying practical pathways for integrating technologies within Adriatic-Ionian ports and defining the skills needed to implement them. In alignment with the UN 2030 Agenda and the European Green Deal, the CEI has long supported projects focused on connectivity and sustainability.
Participants examined the implications of EU regulations such as the EU Green Deal and the European Climate Law, which formalises the goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. These initiatives demand a comprehensive energy transition in port infrastructures and call for innovative management solutions and enhanced energy efficiency. Resolutions from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) were also discussed particularly those regarding pollutant limits, and encouraging the adoption of green technologies such as cold ironing, hydrogen, and LNG infrastructures.
The workshop discussions mark a crucial first step toward building a comprehensive educational and professional ecosystem that fully supports the energy transition in Adriatic-Ionian ports. Through this partnership and the development of necessary skills, NAPA ports can lead the way in sustainable practices, enhancing regional competitiveness and promoting environmental stewardship.
