US seeks extradition of the man who opened fire on the American embassy in Sarajevo

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 27 OTT - The US has requested that Bosnia and Herzegovina extradite Mevlid Jašarević, who carried out a jihadist-inspired terrorist attack on the American Embassy in Sarajevo on October 28, 2011. He fired an automatic rifle for 50 minutes. According to the court verdict, Jašarević fired 105 rounds towards the US Embassy building, targeting officers from the Directorate for Coordination of Police Bodies (DKPT) who were guarding the site. He seriously injured one officer before being apprehended by members of the Sarajevo Canton Police. Instead of being released, the attacker is scheduled to appear before the Bosnian and Herzegovina Court tomorrow, where he will be held in custody pending extradition, according to investigators. In November 2013, the Appellate Court for Organised Crime in Sarajevo sentenced Jašarević to 15 years in prison for terrorism. Jašarević was set to be released after completing his sentence. However, US authorities have requested his extradition to face charges for the attempted murder of US officials during the Sarajevo embassy attack 15 years ago. (ANSA).
