Latvia: Prime Minister Kulbergs' party wins with 35.3% of the vote

(ANSA) - VILNIUS, OCT 5 - United List, the party of Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs, won the parliamentary elections in Latvia with 35.3% of the vote (42 seats), an increase of 24.2% compared to the 2022 elections. This was announced by the Latvian Central Election Commission after receiving the results from 99.99% of the ballots. The populist movements finished well behind: First, Latvia (13.1%, 17 seats) and Sovereign Power (11.7%, 15 seats). The center-right National Alliance party came in fourth (8.9%, 10 seats), followed by the social-democratic movement The Progressives (7.8%, 9 seats). In contrast, only 6.3% of the vote (7 seats) went to Nuova Unità, the party led by former Prime Minister Evika Silina, marking a decline of more than 12% compared to the elections four years ago. The Union of Greens and Farmers, however, has been left out of Parliament for the first time in the last 24 years, having failed to reach the 5% threshold. Voter turnout was down sharply from 2022 (59.4%), standing at just 51.8% of eligible voters—the lowest in the last 35 years. The United List's victory is the largest ever achieved by a political party in Latvian parliamentary elections since the country's secession from the Soviet Union in 1991. "Congratulations to Andris Kulbergs on his clear victory in the Latvian elections. This is an important result that confirms the Latvian people's determination to defend their freedom, their security, and their place in Europe and the West." Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni posted this on social media, congratulating the outgoing prime minister on his re-election. "Italy will continue to work alongside Latvia for a stronger, safer Europe that is capable of defending its interests and values. Good luck, Andris!" she added. (ANSA).
