Prime Minister Kulbergs' party on track for victory in Latvia with 35.4% of the vote

(ANSA-AFP) - RIGA, OCT 4 - Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs' center-right party is on track to win Latvia's parliamentary elections, according to preliminary results, suggesting that the country will maintain its pro-European and pro-Ukrainian stance. However, populist parties—bolstered by support from Latvia's Russian-speaking minority—also performed well at the end of an election campaign dominated by fears related to neighboring Russia and the cost of living. Kulbergs' party, "United List," is in the lead with 35.4% of the vote—according to state television—after more than 90% of the ballots have been counted. ""This result exceeds expectations," Kulbergs had already stated, commenting on exit polls that gave his party a similar lead. "It means that people really want change," he added, explaining that this implies "economic growth" and "a future for (Latvia's) children". Kulbergs took office as Prime Minister only in May. However, his coalition—which pre-election polls had shown to be weakening—will not survive in its current form: one of the parties in the coalition appeared destined to lose its seats, while others failed to achieve the results they had hoped for.
