(ANSA-AFP) - BUDAPEST, 22 LUG - Hungary's prosecutor general said Wednesday he would step down following pressure from Prime Minister Peter Magyar, who called him a "puppet" of nationalist ex-leader Viktor Orban. Gabor Balint Nagy, who was appointed last year under Orban, said in a statement he was resigning "solely to safeguard the interests of the prosecutorial service". He added: "The functioning and independence of the prosecutor's office must not, under any circumstances, be compromised by the disgraceful, politically motivated struggles surrounding the prosecutor general." He also said that the "attacks" on him had "gone far beyond the bounds of acceptable professional and public debate". Since ousting Orban from power in April elections, Magyar has pushed to get rid of a host of top officials including ex-president Tamas Sulyok, who was removed by a constitutional amendment on Sunday. Orban's Fidesz party has denounced Magyar's moves as "autocratic", a charge that was often levelled against the former premier himself during his tenure. The top prosecutor's announcement comes the day after a data centre hosting Fidesz servers was raided over corruption allegations. The prime minister welcomed Nagy's resignation, which will take effect late August. "With this, the country has rid itself of yet another of Orban's puppets who was obstructing the transition to democracy," Magyar said on Facebook. "Gentlemen, who will be next?" he added. (ANSA-AFP).
