(ANSA) - UDINE, 15 LUG - AQUILEIA, JULY 15 - For the first time in nearly seven centuries, the three surviving sections of the Gospel of Mark, one of the most important manuscripts of medieval Europe, will be reunited in Aquileia, near Udine, where their story began. The exhibition, The Gospel of Mark. Seven Centuries. Three Fragments. A European Story will be held at Palazzo Meizlik from September 12, 2026, to April 25, 2027. Promoted and organized by the Aquileia Foundation with the support of Italy's Ministry of Culture and the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, the exhibition is the result of a cultural diplomacy initiative involving Italian and Czech civic, religious and museum institutions. Partners include the Municipality and Basilica of Aquileia, the National Archaeological Museum of Cividale del Friuli, St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, the Metropolitan Chapter of St. Vitus, the Prague Castle Archives and the Archdiocese of Prague. Among the most significant loans is the fragment held in the Treasury of St. Vitus Cathedral, which is considered an indivisible part of the heritage of the Czech state and people and will leave the country for the first time. The manuscript, the curators said, was once venerated as an autograph work by the evangelist and has been dated by scholars to the sixth century. It was preserved in Aquileia for centuries before being divided into separate sections. The exhibition will retrace its history, restoring unity to an important testament to medieval European culture. (ANSA).
