(ANSA) - TRIESTE, 04 FEB - In recognition of its long-standing commitment to raising historical and civic awareness about the tragedy faced by Italians from Istria, Rijeka, and Dalmatia—well before the establishment of the Day of Remembrance—the Mursia publishing house is releasing three notable titles: L'Iris by Francesco Felicetti, Women and the Julian-Dalmatian Exodus: Memories of a Forgotten History by Giuseppina Mellace, and Farewell, Rijeka! The Rijeka Epic from World War II to the Great Exodus, 1940-1954 by Marino Micich L'Iris is a family saga that depicts the gradual uprooting of Dalmatian Italians, spanning the final decades of the 19th century to the first significant exodus from the cities, towns, and islands of Dalmatia after World War I. During this time, they found themselves within the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. Women and the Julian-Dalmatian Exodus focuses on the experiences of women—mothers, daughters, and sisters—who were refugees during the exodus. The book shares their struggles, including losing their homes, being separated from loved ones, enduring life in refugee camps, and navigating the complex process of rebuilding their lives. The narrative is anchored by two symbolic figures: Egea Haffner, the little girl depicted in the well-known Day of Remembrance poster, whom the author interviewed, and Licia Cossetto, who was forced to leave Istria after identifying her sister Norma's body. Norma suffered horrific violence before being thrown alive into the foiba of Villa Surani. Farewell, Rijeka! takes a broader historical perspective, tracing 14 critical years in Rijeka's history, from World War II to the final departure of the Italian community. (ANSA).
